TxCAN is dedicated to raising awareness of the limitless potential of students with significant cognitive disabilities. It’s all about presuming competence and finding the most appropriate supports to provide connection, access, and increased opportunities. The mission is to put effective, evidence-based tools and strategies into the hands of teachers, and families, to help them on their journey.

TxCAN: Context + Needs

Post-secondary education is more important to states than ever before. By 2030, 65% of U.S. jobs will require a postsecondary degree or certificate. Thus, college access is essential for Texas’ 7 million children to thrive. To meet that demand, states must lead efforts to graduate more students from high-quality certificate and degree programs with the resources available. Texas has set a target of 65% high school-to-higher-education enrollment by 2030. This target is called the 60x30TX Plan. Currently, even though 73% of Texas students apply for college, only 52% enroll. This is a challenge the state must overcome in order to me their goal. Because The Texas College Access Network (TxCAN) works to combat Texas’ most pressing problems in higher education access they want to understand, highlight and recommend best practices that will assist in meeting this new goal.

Chantelle George Consulting Insights + Approach

Through a mixed method learning approach, Chantelle George Consulting identified, categorized, and highlighted the most promising postsecondary access and success best practices currently being implemented across Texas. This approach consisted of an artifact review, stakeholder survey, and staff interviews and focus groups. CGC analyzed all of the data to make key recommendations to the TxCAN leadership.

Organizational Impact

Chantelle George Consulting recommended a set of 10 best practices to TxCAN that will lead to increased postsecondary success for students across the state. These best practices including counselor advising practices, data standardization, and postsecondary partnerships are being implemented across state education agencies and community partners.
